About this poster:
After the September 11th terrorist attacks, the American people were awakened to the threat of radical Islam. Shortly after, in attempt to protect us from further attacks, President George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act into law in 2001. Law enforcement agencies were given greater latitude in searching email, telephone, financial, and medical records. It also authorized the use of roving wiretaps, among other measures. Key provisions of the act were extended by President Obama in May of 2011. But isn't this essentially the scenario that Ben Franklin warned us about? How much liberty are we willing to give up in order to be protected from terrorism? Are the benefits worth the costs? Will the state use the threat as an excuse to expand its power? Or has the Patriot Act protected us, and is the fear surrounding it much ado about nothing?
